Background: House Bill 1208 would prohibit residents who live overseas or use a post office box or an address with a mail-forwarding services from voting in state or local elections.
Our position: The ACLU of South Dakota opposes House Bill 1208. Residents who use post office boxes or mail forwarding services or live overseas would only be allowed to vote in national elections, which includes president, U.S. Senate, and U.S. House. This bill would segregate a class of individuals based on residence ownership or time in the state and denies them the ability to vote on issues that directly affect their lives and pocketbooks.
