Background: Senate Bill 217 would prohibit the use of electronic ballot marking systems and voting tabulation machines.

Our position: The ACLU of south Dakota opposes Senate Bill 217. Efforts to replace modern ballot marking systems and voting tabulation machines are based on false conspiracy theories.

Research has shown that electronic tabulation voting systems are more accurate and efficient than counting ballots by hand. Hand-counting of ballots, which is more prone to human error, is less accurate and less efficient than electronic tabulation machines.
