ACLU of South Dakota available to comment during Lakota Nation Invitational this week

Basketball is the name of the game at Lakota Nation Invitational, but there’s more to LNI than just hoops.

The event also features other sports like wrestling, track and cheerleading, cultural and academic competitions, and educational events. With an atmosphere that’s both competitive and celebratory, Lakota Nation Invitational is one of the largest annual displays of Lakota and Native American culture.

Candi Brings Plenty, the ACLU of South Dakota’s indigenous justice organizer, will be speaking at the Lakota Youth Leadership Summit as a Lakota Perspectives panelist as part of the summit’s RED (Resources, Education and Diversity) Talk series at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 19.

Brings Plenty will also be available to talk with LNI attendees about the ACLU’s indigenous justice work at the ACLU’s table inside the Civic Center’s main area from 12 to 6 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.

As indigenous justice organizer, Brings Plenty works to build the ACLU’s public education and advocacy programs through coalition-building, leadership development, communication and lobbying and is responsible for advancing the ACLU’s civil liberties and civil rights campaigns in South Dakota. She leads the efforts surrounding the ACLU’s work with First Amendment issues around the Keystone XL pipeline, missing and murdered indigenous women and girls, and Two Spirit visibility. She also will be working to strengthen voting accessibility to tribal communities as the 2020 election approaches.

As you cover Lakota Nation Invitational this week, Brings Plenty is available to comment on the educational aspects of the event and about the ACLU’s indigenous justice work. For an interview, contact ACLU of South Dakota Communications Director Janna Farley at 605-366-7732

About the ACLU of South Dakota

Based in Sioux Falls, the American Civil Liberties Union of South Dakota is a non-partisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of civil liberties and civil rights. The ACLU of South Dakota is part of a three-state chapter that also includees North Dakota and Wyoming. The team in South Dakota is supported by staff in those states.

The ACLU believes freedoms of press, speech, assembly, and religion, and the rights to due process, equal protection and privacy, are fundamental to a free people.  In addition, the ACLU seeks to advance constitutional protections for groups traditionally denied their rights, including people of color, women, and the LGBTQ communities. The ACLU of South Dakota carries out its work through selective litigation, lobbying at the state and local level, and through public education and awareness of what the Bill of Rights means for the people of South Dakota.
