Update: With a 32-3 vote, Senate lawmakers voted to advance Senate Bill 75.
Background: Senate Bill 75 would require a driver’s license or permit to indicate whether or not someone is a United States citizen.
Our position. The ACLU of South Dakota opposes Senate Bill 75. A visible indication of immigration status on a driver's license could lead to privacy concerns. Marking citizenship on a driver’s license could unnecessarily expose an individual’s immigration status, potentially leading to harassment or discrimination in housing, employment, and other areas of life.
