Update: House Bill 1153 was withdrawn at the request of the prime sponsor.
Background: House Bill 1153 would authorize a law enforcement officer to detain an individual they suspect is committing, has committed, or is about to commit a crime for up to 60 minutes.
Our position: The ACLU of South Dakota opposes House Bill 1153. Detaining people without charge is a violation of their civil liberties.
