Being an ally is action-oriented. If you're an ally to the LGBTQ+ and Two Spirit community it means you take action in solidarity with LGBTQ+ and Two Spirit South Dakotans. It means you respond to LGBTQ+ and Two Spirit folks' self-determined requests, for example, using the correct pronouns.
Ally Academy will provide a basic framework of understanding Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Plus and Two Spirit (LGBTQ+ 2s) and the unique challenges they face. This event, hosted by Candi Brings Plenty, was created to foster dialogue regarding what it means to be an ally for LGBTQ+ and Two Spirit folks by informing participants about terminology used within the community, the process of “coming out” as an LGBTQ+ and Two Spirit person. Through activities participants are encouraged to explore their own biases, build their knowledge and understanding, and develop empathy. In addition to providing this framework, the ACLU's Ally Academy will leave attendees with action items to take home and share with their peers.
This event is open on January 12, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. MT at the downtown Rapid City library on Quincy St. and is free for anyone to attend who wishes to expand their knowledge and abilities as an ally to the LGBTQ+ and Two Spirit community.
