UPDATE: Senate Bill 119 was tabled on the House floor.
Senate Bill 119 would permit the use of tribal identification cards when registering to vote.
The ACLU of South Dakota supports Senate Bill 119. This bill would help Native Americans overcome the structural and socioeconomic barriers that have long contributed to their historically low participation in elections.
Native American citizens have been historically disenfranchised and have had to fight for their right to vote for the past 100 years. By permitting the use of tribal identification cards when registering to vote, South Dakota opens up the door for more equitable participation in the political process.
